Out on the Land
In July, we headed out on the land to explore and pick aqpik, with the long summer daylight giving us plenty of time to wander.

Fireweed
Fireweed is a familiar sight across the northern landscapes of Canada, Alaska and Europe.

By the Water
Visiting the marina just outside Kuujjuaq, a popular place to spend time by the water.

Heading Out by ATV
We travelled by ATV beyond Kuujjuaq, feeling the cold July wind across the open land.

Northern Waters
Outside Kuujjuaq, the landscape opens onto the broad waters of the Koksoak River, flowing north toward Ungava Bay.

The Open Landscape
In summer, the tundra and taiga become intensely green beneath an enormous northern sky.

Picking Aqpik
The reason for our trip out on the land was to pick aqpik, or cloudberries. These golden-orange berries grow close to the ground and, when perfectly ripe, are juicy and sweet with a distinctive northern flavour.

Evening by the Water
The sun lingers for hours this far north, casting warm light across the rocky shore even late in the day.

A Vast Horizon
Taking a mini-break to picnic after picking aqpik.

The Road Back
Heading back toward Kuujjuaq across the high plateau, where the vast northern sky seems almost close enough to touch.

Bumpy ride
A bumpy but beautiful ride back to Kuujjuaq.

Kuujjuaq
The road connecting the two parts of Kuujjuaq, winding through the green summer landscape beside the Koksoak River.

Heading Home
Rain on the tarmac turns the Air Inuit plane into a reflection.

South Again
After the open spaces, of Nunavik, we were back to the cityscape of Montréal.
